Essay for the 'Fantasy and Science Fiction: The Human Mind, Our Modern World' course offered by the University of Michigan at www.coursera.org:In Household Stories, the brothers Grimm look to arm children with a more realistic view of the world by presenting them with an array of tales with counterintuitive and sometimes conflicting moralities. In the dominant cultural narrative, childrens stories have come to follow a predictable arc: Good people are confronted by an unpleasant force, fall intoThe Grimm brothers stories are fairy tales in certain context, and are used just an entertaining with some morals, but there is a lot more to the stories, something more primal and more fundamental to human nature that wants to teach to its audience the importance of several things, two of those I identify as Intelligence or the cunning minds that use their intellect to have things they way and the importance of certain ethics as in keeping ones word.Examples of the importance of intelligence in

Coursera - Fantasy and Science Fiction: The Human Mind, Our Modern WorldFinished 1/2 the stories. My essay: The Clever Shall Inherit?Throughout ones reading of Grimms Household Tales, several familiar faces appear. They definitely do not sing the familiar praises to those who work hard, or those who wait patiently for their prince to come,
Pretty much what I expected, with a few fun turns. Darker than the tales we are told as children. People are more evil than you think, and usually because they are starving, including a great willingness to kill their children for practically any reason. Cleverness is valued over goodness, but keeping promises is paramount. How's that for a nutshell?I finally read this because it was the first week's assignment for the Coursera science fiction and fantasy class that I'm taking.
